55.8 minutes per day. That's the average amount of time an American adult spends daily on the Chinese social network TikTok, according to a study released Thursday, March 2, by the marketing research firm eMarketer.
That's more than on any other social network. Behind TikTok come YouTube (47.5 minutes), Twitter (34.1 minutes), Snapchat (30.8 minutes), Instagram (30.6 minutes), Facebook (30.2 minutes), Reddit (23.6 minutes).
TikTok in the crosshairs of Congress
The company's prediction for 2024: Americans will spend more than 58 minutes a day on the app, just behind Netflix (1:02). 56.3% of time spent on social networks is currently devoted to video. According to eMarketer, that's 9% more than in 2021.
The TikTok platform, owned by the Chinese group ByteDance, is however the subject of a bill in Congress to ban it. The text was adopted Wednesday morning by the House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs Committee.
Elected officials consider the platform to be a security threat. They fear that the power of Beijing could access users' data worldwide - something TikTok denies. The text must now be voted by the House of Representatives and then the Senate.
