What is text editing?
Editing textual material is a change in structure, form, and, most importantly, content. Editing is aimed at changing the text of the essay as such, at building the logic of the presentation of the material. As a rule, editing any text takes much more time than writing it. Without correcting mistakes and eliminating flaws, no text will look respectable. These peculiarities of working with the text should be known to any novice author.
What does the text editor do?

1. Check spelling and punctuation.
2. Try to improve the style.
3. Eliminate lexical errors.
4. Check the layout of the text, chapters, and sections.
5. Check composition and logic, remove repetition,
Eliminate repetitions, word parasites, and inappropriate phrases.
6. Check the text for consistency.
7. Check dates, facts, figures, and quotations in the text.
The main task of the editor is to make the text of the essay more accessible and understandable for readers.
What types of editing essays are there?
In the methodology of editing essays, it is customary to distinguish between four types of text editing: proofreading, editing-cutting, editing-processing, and editing-revisions.
The purpose of proofreading is to read the text through. The proofreader should note semantic, compositional, and stylistic flaws; pay attention to the correct spelling of place names, names, and surnames, the accuracy of quotations, figures, and dates, and check the comparability of units of measurement. It is his responsibility to check the consistency of the headings with the text and the consistency of the captions with the figures. It is his responsibility to note and point out flaws in the material, but not to correct the text.
The purpose of editing- cutting is to reduce the length of the text, to bring it to a certain size. Usually, abbreviations are caused by the need to make conjectural changes or the need for various technical natures. Editing-cutting is a direct intervention in the text. Therefore, the editor must take into account the peculiarities of the changes made to the text when abbreviating.
Such reductions can be of two kinds: text reduction by parts and intra-text reductions. In the first case, parts of the text that represent certain semantic links are excluded, they are usually arranged compositional and syntactic. The reduction of similar examples, facts of the same semantic series, and private details do not cause difficulties in editing. If the abbreviations are outlined correctly, do not distort the meaning, and do not contradict the author’s manner, the text after them needs minimal additional processing of “joints”. It is necessary to achieve the coherence of the text. Cutting the text, the editor must always be careful to ensure that the episodes and facts excluded in the process of editing are not mentioned indirectly in the subsequent presentation. When the connection between the semantic links is necessary, the reduction of the text in large parts is not possible. In this case, intratextual reductions are resorted to, which require a deeper intervention.
Abbreviations due to the literary qualities of the text should be considered as editing-processing. This is the most common type of editing. Its task is to prepare the final version of the text for publication, which fully takes into account the results of the editorial analysis. The purpose is a literary finish the text, improve its form, clarifying the author’s idea, his idea. By its nature, the changes made to the text are varied: shortening, the addition of certain fragments, changing syntactic structures, improving the composition, etc.
The purpose of editing revisions is to create a new version of the text on the basis of the material presented by the author, to change the genre structure of the work, and to process the text in the case of a change in its intended purpose.
The division of editing into types according to its purpose is conditional. Text editing is rarely limited to any one type. Thus, the professionalism of the editor manifests itself in the ability to apply expediently various methods of book editing.
